one of my school teachers at school described nick hornby as the male alternative to all the chick lit of the world like louisa bagshawe and marian keyes. How do you feel about this?
i think his books have slightly more substance and depth as well as a greater social comemtary. does this implie that women are more vacuous than men? i know girls enjoy this book but do you think a bloke could get through Bridget Jones diary?
personally though i like my chick lit to feature more sex than this offering, even if it is 'dick lit'
i've yet to meet a man (inc gay ones!) who have happily read and loved Bridget Jones' diary. But to the same extent this could also apply to Austen although i think she gets a higher profile due to the greatness of her actual writing. But the question is can a man happily read chick lit and enjoy it? Or do you think that it is just too feminine?
I think the biggest problem is that men are not happy sitting and reading books with flowery or girly things on the cover.
My English teacher at A Level used to read Mills&Boon and lend them out to the class, if you really wanted to borrow a 50+ year old single man's version of cheap porn!
I can't think of a single male that I have come across who enjoyed the Bridget Jones films either, never mind the books!
I think that About a Boy would be a good read for both men and women. It has a good selection of male and female characters which both sexes could relate to, although if you find yourself relating to Marcus' mum get yourself away from any medication, go to the nearest insane asylum and book yourself into a comfy padded cell!
